Clemson, SC -- Michigan State and Clemson battled through a cold, error-filled contest to wrap up the 2020 Big Ten -ACC Challenge on Sunday, with the Tigers earning a 8-4 victory.
Â
Clemson took an early lead with a big first inning, as the Tigers had a pair of doubles, a single, and a homer to go up 3-0, then made it 4-0 on a Grace Mattimore RBI single.   Â
Â
The Spartans battled back with three runs in the bottom of the third, aided by three Clemson errors in the frame.  In the bottom of the fifth, MSU got a pair of baserunners on a leadoff single by Mackenzie Meech, a walk by Erica Holt, and back-to-back hit batters brought home the tying run. The Spartans gave back the runs with three errors in the top of the sixth that helped Clemson re-establish a four-run lead – a dropped third strike, a dropped infield fly, and a flubbed ground ball to the right side of the infield.Â
Â
MSU left the bases loaded in both the third and the fifth inning, stranded two in the seventh, and a grand total of 11 in the game. Clemson left eight on the basepaths.Â
Â
Alli Walker had a strong relief outing, picking up six strikeouts in her six innings of work, surrendering four runs (none earned) and walking three. Valerie Cagel started the game in the circle and gave up one earned run (four total), and also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBI. Logan Caymol earned the save with three innings of work, striking out six.  Both Marissa Guimbarda and Alia Logoleo had two base hits for the Tigers (7-4).Â
Â
Michigan State heads to Fort Myers, FL for the Florida Gulf Coast Spring Break Invitational next week, where it will play UMass-Lowell, Harvard, Southern Illinois FGCU, and Fordham

STATS AND STORYLINES
- The Tigers took an early lead in this one, as Grace Mattimore reached on an error and was followed by a homer to left by Valerie Cagle for a 2-0 lead. Marissa Guimbarda followed two batters later with a solo shot to right center for the 3-0 first-inning advantage.Â
- MSU got something going in the home half of the third, aided by three Clemson errors in the frame. . Kennedy Wyllie and Caitie Ladd smacked consecutive base hits to lead off the inning, Quinlan put down a sac bunt to move the runners into scoring position (and was almost safe at first on the attempt). The error parade began for the Tigers at that point, as MSU brought three runs across the plate to bring the Spartans within one, 4-3.Â
- Pinch hitter Mackenzie Meech led off the home half of the fifth with a base hit into the 5-6 hole, Erica Holt walked, and the Tigers went to the bullpen to bring on Saturday pitcher Logan Caymol. She struck out the first batter she saw but hit the next two, which loaded the bases and walked in the tying run to make it a tie ballgame. Caymol struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning without further damage.  Â
- In the top of the sixth, the Tigers threatened – it was MSU's turn for a multiple-error inning, as a dropped infield fly and intentional walk loaded the bases, and another error to the right side scored a pair of Clemson runners for a 6-4 advantage. Melissa Guimbarda doubled with runners at the corners for a 8-4 lead before MSU could get out of the inning.Â
- Caymol earned the save with three shutout innings, striking out five and walking one.Â
- Alli Walker entered with one on and none out in the second, her second relief outing of the weekend and sixth of the season. She struck out a career-best six in the game Â
- Kennedy Wyllie had a pair of base hits, her second two-hit game of the season.Â
