Offense Struggles In 2-1 Loss to Southern Illinois
2/22/2020 7:12:00 PM | Softball
Estero, FL -- Michigan State struggled to find a timely hit in its game against Southern Illinois on Saturday, and dropped a 2-1 decision to the Salukis in the FGCU Spring Break Invitational.Â
Â
The Spartans (2-9) suffered their fourth one-run loss of the season, three of which have come by a 2-1 score. The pitcher of record in all four contests has been freshman southpaw Sarah Ladd, who scattered six base hits in the Saturday afternoon game, striking out six and stranding 10 SIU runners.Â
Â
The teams traded runs in the third inning, with Caitie Ladd driving in the Spartan score in the top of the frame with her second base hit of the day.  Jenny Jansen drove in the Saluki run with a double in the home half, the third of three consecutive base hits for SIU.Â
Â
The winning run scored in the bottom of the sixth inning for Southern Illinois (6-5), with Susie Baranski playing the role of hero with her RBI double.Â
Â
Caitie Ladd and Mackenzie Meech each went 2-for-3 for the Spartans. Baranzki and Maddy Vermejan also recorded a pair of base hits each for SIU.
Â
Sarah Ladd tossed her fourth consecutive complete game, but took the loss in the circle. Winning pitcher Sarah Harness also allowed six hits, striking out seven and allowing just the one earned runs in 7.0 innings.Â
Â
The Spartans will play both host FGCU to wrap up Saturday action.

STATS AND STORYLINES
- Caitie Ladd got things going in the top of the first with a one-out double into right center, and Joanna Bartz earned a two-out walk, but both were stranded.Â
- Katie Quinlan got a one-out bloop single in the third, went to second on an error by the second baseman on an Erica Holt ground ball, and came around to score on a Caitie Ladd single up the middle.Â
- The Salukis countered in the home half of the third – a pair of singles followed by a double from Jenny Jansen brought home Susie Baranski to tie the game at 1-1 without an out on the scoreboard.
- Southern Illinois took its first lead of the day in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Sidney Sikes laced a one-out single to right, and Baranski doubled to left center to bring pinch runner Meredith Wernig home for a 2-1 lead. Sarah Ladd got the next two to fly out to end the inning.
- Needing a seventh-inning rally, Courtney Callahan laced a single up the middle with one out, but the left fielder made a nice running catch for the second out of the inning and pitcher Sarah Harness recorded her seventh K of the day to end the inning.

- Sarah Ladd has not gotten run support in her outings in the circle. Over her last six starts, MSU has scored just six runs. Her one win this season came in relief on Friday, a 5-3 victory over Harvard where she pitched three innings.Â
