MSU Falls to Fordham 3-1 To Close Out FGCU Invitational
2/23/2020 2:03:00 PM | Softball
Estero, FL -- Michigan State  suffered a 3-1 loss to Fordham on Sunday to close out the FGCU Spring Break Invitational.Â
Â
Freshman pitcher Sarah Ladd tossed another complete game, and surrendering just three runs on six base hits, striking out seven and walking just one. It was the fifth straight start for Ladd where the Spartans scored two runs or fewer, and fourth consecutive with just one run of support. She owns a 2.10 ERA on the season.Â
Â
The Spartans scored first, as Katie Quinlan scooted home from third on an errant pickoff throw to second base in the bottom of the third inning. A triple from Sarah Taffet  and a homer by Madie Aughinbaugh allowed Fordham to pull ahead 2-1 in the top of the fourth, and added an insurance run in the top of the seventh with an error, a fielder's choice, and a base hit. Â
Â
MSU had a pair of baserunners in the home half of the fourth, but was retired in order in both the fifth and sixth innings. Caitie Ladd tried to start a one-out rally in the bottom of the seventh with a single to left, and moved to second on a ground ball by Quinlan where she was beaten to the bag by an eyelash for the second out of the inning. Meech walked to put a pair of runners on, but the pitcher Aughinbaugh got the strikeout to end the Spartan threat and the game.Â
Â
Fordham starter Devon Miller went five innings, striking out six and scattering six base hits and walking three. Aughinbaugh came on in the sixth and surrendered just one base hit, striking out one and walking one, and buoyed her own cause with her two-run homer in the fourth. Â
Â
The Spartans begins its spring break trip to California next week, based in Riverside, California from Feb. 28-March 7.

STATS AND STORYLINES
- MSU started things off from the first inning, as Caitie Ladd singled to right, moved to second on a sac bunt by Katie Quinlan, and then went to third on a double by Mackenzie Meech. Pitcher Devon Miller walked Joanna Bartz to load the bases with just one out, but Miller got a K and a ground ball to get out of the inning.Â
- MSU got on the scoreboard in the third inning, when back-to-back base hits by Katie Quinlan and Mackenzie Meech had runners at the corners. Meech made a break for second on a stolen base attempt, and the throw down to try to nab her went off its mark – allowing Quinlan to come home.
- The Rams countered in the top of the fourth with a triple from Sarah Taffet followed by a homer by DP Madie Aughinbaugh to make it 2-1.Â
-  Shae Schreckengost smacked a double deep into center field with one out in the bottom of the fourth, and Caitie Ladd walked to put a pair on – but Miller got a line drive to short to end the inning.
- MSU was retired in order in the fifth, and then saw a new pitcher in the sixth – DP Madie Aughinbaugh moved into the circle and retired three straight Spartans in the bottom of the sixth.Â
-  The Rams got a pair of base runners in the top of the seventh – a one-out error and a fielder's choice. With two outs on the board, a base hit on the right field line allowed the first run to score for a 3-1 lead, but the second runner got caught in a rundown between third and home for the final out of the inning.
