INDIANAPOLIS – Three former Michigan State Spartans – quarterback Brian Lewerke and wide receivers Darrell Stewart Jr. and Cody White – tested in front of NFL coaches, scouts and front-office personnel on Thursday for the first day of the on-field portion of the NFL Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Lewerke, who measured in at 6-2 and 213 pounds, looked sharp during his throwing drills and was a top performer in several testing categories. His time of 4.40 seconds in the 20-yard shuttle was the second best among QBs, and his time of 7.14 seconds in the three-cone drill was fourth best. He timed out at 4.95 seconds in the 40-yard dash, which came in 11th.
A three-year starter, Lewerke finished his career as the school's all-time leader in total offense with 9,548 yards, including an MSU single-season record 3,442 yards as a senior in 2019. He is the only Spartan QB in school history to throw for more than 8,000 yards (8,293) and rush for more than 1,000 (1,255).
Stewart (6-0, 212 pounds), who missed the last four games of the regular season with a leg injury but returned in limited action at the Pinstripe Bowl, was back in action at the NFL Combine. He recorded 15 reps on the bench press and had a vertical jump of 35 inches and a broad jump of 117 inches.
The Houston, Texas, native had 150 receptions during his Spartan career, third most in school history.
The 6-3, 217-pound White clocked a time of 7.19 seconds in the three-cone drill, which was 15th among the wide receivers at the combine. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.66 seconds and the 20-yard shuttle in 4.52 seconds. In addition, he measured at 35.5 inches for the vertical jump and 120 inches in the broad jump.
White, a three-year letterwinner, closed his career ranked seventh in MSU history with 143 receptions, 12th with 1,967 receiving yards, and tied for 16th with 12 TD catches.
Michigan State has seven players participating in the 2020 NFL Combine, tied for the 11th most of any school in the FBS and the most for program since 2016.
On Saturday, linebacker Joe Bachie, defensive end Kenny Willekes and defensive tackle Raequan Williams will perform on-field testing, while cornerback Josiah Scott is scheduled to test on Sunday.
