Spartans, Tanida Take Second at the UCF Challenge

ORLANDO, Florida – The 13th-ranked Michigan State women's golf team got its spring schedule off to a strong start by taking second place in the UCF Challenge at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando. The Spartans compiled their lowest round of the tournament in Tuesday's finale at 7-under-par 281. MSU finished the tournament 15-under-par 849 (282-286-281), one shot ahead of third-place Miami and six shots back of No. 3 Kent State.
The Spartans' 849 is their lowest total of the season and tied for the third lowest in program history.

Junior Yurika Tanida had the best finish of her collegiate career as she tied for second place at 7-under-par 209 (66-72-71). Tanida turned in her second round of the tournament under par with a 1-under 71 on Tuesday, which included two birdies over the final five holes.
Allyson Geer-Park (71-72-70) and Valery Plata (71-71-71) tied for 12th place at 3-under-par 213. Geer-Park was 2-over-par through 12 holes on Tuesday, but strung together three consecutive birdies and four over the last five holes to card her lowest round of the tournament at 2-under-par 70.
Plata was consistent all tournament and ended with her third straight 1-under-par 71 on Tuesday.
Paz Marfa Sans finished 1-over-par 217 (74-71-72) and tied for 33rd place.
Haylin Harris had the best round of any Spartan on Tuesday with a 3-under-par 69, which included four birdies. She finished 2-over-par 218 (74-75-69) and tied for 41st place.
Individually, Nini Rissi had her best tournament as a Spartan as the freshman tied for 21st place at 1-under-par 215 (74-71-70). Rissi lowered her score each round, culminating with a career best 2-under-par 70 on Tuesday.
Sydney Naro finished 7-over-par 223 (76-72-75).
Miami's Renate Grimstad claimed medalist honors with a 14-under-par 202.
Michigan State will be back in action Feb. 16-18 at the Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, Louisiana.
