PALM COAST, Florida – The Michigan State men's golf team played its final two matches of the 2020 Big Ten Match Play Championship on Saturday at the Hammock Beach Resort Ocean Course. The Spartans dropped their opening match to Iowa, 4 & 2, and then tied Minnesota, but the Gophers claimed the tiebreaker.

"We were better this afternoon," said MSU head coach Casey Lubahn. "Iowa played well this morning and then this afternoon we played better against a good Minnesota team. We have some major areas to clean up and if this doesn't motivate us, I don't know what will."
Senior Andrew Walker won both of his matches on Saturday and three of four on the weekend to lead the Spartans. Redshirt sophomore Landon Ernst went 2-2 in the two-day tournament at the par 72, 6,981-yard course.
"Landon and Andrew were both great all weekend and really steady," said Lubahn. "We'll need that going forward so it's nice to see."
Ernst (3 & 1) and Walker (2 & 1) won their respective morning matches against the Hawkeyes.
In the afternoon against Minnesota, Bradley Smithson took the lead on Lincoln Johnson with six holes to go to win 3 & 2. Walker never trailed in his 4 & 2 win over Harrison Arnold. Devin Deogun finished 1 up on Noah Rasinski to give MSU its third win.
Both the Spartans and Gophers won 12 holes, so the second tiebreaker of the outcome of the No. 1 spot match went to Minnesota as Angus Flanagan finished 1 up on James Piot.
The Spartans will be in action again next Saturday when they square off against Miami University in Bluffton, South Carolina, at Berkley Hall Golf Club.
