Former Spartan Wrestler Franklin Gomez Qualifies for 2020 Summer Olympics

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Former Spartan National Champion Franklin Gomez qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, after a top-two finish in the 74 kg freestyle competition on Sunday, March 15 at the Pan-American Olympic Qualifier in Ottawa, Canada.
Gomez, a two-time Big Ten champion for the Spartans at 133 pounds (2008-09), knocked off Nestor Taffur of Colombia, 9-4, in the semifinals of the Olympic qualifier to qualify for his third Olympic games (2012, 2016). Gomez becomes the first Puerto Rican to qualify for the Olympic games three times.Â
A 2009 National Champion at 133 pounds, Gomez has three top-five finishes in world competition this year, including top-two appearances at the Pan-American Championships, March 6-9 in Canada, and the Pan-American Olympic qualifier, March 13-15. Gomez claimed a silver medal at the Pan-American Championships after falling to Olympic gold medalist Jordan Burroughs, 8-1, in the finals.Â
Gomez amassed 119 career wins for the Spartans from 2006-10 and is tied for sixth all-time on the career wins list at Michigan State.Â
