Michigan State Squaring Off With South Carolina-Upstate Wednesday In All-Spartan Clash

MSU wraps up time in Greenville at Fluor Field; Opens week among others receiving votes in NCBWA Top 25 Poll.
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Michigan State baseball will square off with South Carolina-Upstate in an all-Spartan clash on Wednesday, March 4 with a 4 p.m. ET first pitch to wrap up its time in Greenville, South Carolina at Fluor Field to open MSU's Spring Break trip.
After going 3-0 over the weekend and winning the First Pitch Invitational, the MSU Spartans bring an 8-3 record into Wednesday's game. Michigan State enters the week among others receiving votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division I Top-25 Poll.Â
USC-Upstate is also 8-3, entering its home game against The Citadel Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Michigan State has won four in a row, all by a combined four runs, with a 15-14 walk-off win in 10 innings on Feb. 23, then an 8-7 walk-off win over Kansas on Feb. 28 in the opening game of the First Pitch Invitational. MSU then beat Western Carolina, 4-3, on Feb. 29, winning on a defensive walk-off with senior outfielder Bryce Kelley throwing out the potential tying run at the plate with the tag from redshirt-freshman catcher Gabe Sotres for the final out in the top of the ninth to preserve the win. Michigan State then sealed the team title of winning the First Pitch Invitational on Sunday, with a come-from-behind 8-6 win over Ball State, rallying from down 6-2 in the fourth inning.
Wednesday marks the second-ever clash of the Spartans between MSU and USC-Upstate, first meeting in 2015, also at Fluor Field in Greenville, playing in the First Pitch Invitational and Michigan State won, 6-5.
The northern Spartans are led by senior infielder Bailey Peterson, who is hitting .523 with 14 RBI, adding seven stolen bases. Senior outfielder Bryce Kelley is hitting .447, also with seven swipes on the basepaths, and redshirt-sophomore infielder Peter Ahn is hitting .409 with 14 RBI, along with a team-best eight extra-base hits.
Ahn was named the Big Ten Conference Co-Player of the Week, for his performance over the weekend, as announced by the conference office on Monday, March 2.
A native of Delafield, Wisconsin, Ahn hit .636 (7-of-11) for the weekend, with six RBI and five runs scored, helping MSU win the 2020 First Pitch Invitational going 3-0 for the weekend at Fluor Field, home of the Greenville Drive. He posted an .818 slugging percentage and a .615 on-base percentage. Ahn also added two stolen bases, one walk and one sacrifice fly, in scoring five runs.
The MSU pitching staff is has a 3.26 team ERA, firing 121 strikeouts (10.7 K/9 inn.), yielding 55 walks and hotling the opposition to a .236 average.
USC-Upstate enters Tuesday's game led by sophomore outfielder Jack Hennessy hitting .355 with 10 RBI and eight stolen bases. Junior utility player Mason Stewart is hitting .351 with six RBI, while junior catcher/first baseman Devin Buckner has a .326 average with eight ribbies.
The southern Spartans' pitching staff has a team ERA of 3.27, with 112 strikeouts (10.2 K/9 inn.), while walking 46 batters (4.2 pg) and the opposition is hitting .217 against them.
The MSU Spartans will continue their Spring Break trip by heading to Pensacola, Florida to play in the Cox Diamond Invitational, Friday-Sunday, March 6-8. MSU will open action against Troy on Friday, March 6, then Louisiana on Saturday, March 7 and Samford on Sunday, March 8.
