Taryn McCutcheon and Julia Ayrault both earn double-doubles in the loss.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Despite two players grabbing double-doubles, the No. 8-seeded Michigan State women's basketball's comeback fell short against No. 9-seeded Purdue Thursday in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
The Spartans fall to 16-14 this season, while Purdue improves to 18-13. The Boilermakers will take on top-seeded Maryland on Friday.
Senior guard Shay Colley and sophomore guard Nia Clouden led MSU in scoring with 14 points each. Colley came on strong in the fourth quarter with nine points in the final 10 minutes. Both senior guard Taryn McCutcheon and freshman guard Julia Ayrault earned double-doubles. Ayrault scored 11 points with 10 rebounds off the bench, while McCutcheon had 10 points and 10 boards. This was Ayrault's second double-double of the season and McCutcheon's first.
MSU battled through injuries as sophomore Kayla Belles and freshman Moira Joiner sustained ankle injuries this week.
Purdue also had four players in double figures led by 17 from Karissa McLaughlin.
Both teams got off to a hot start in the first quarter with the Boilermakers jumping out to an early 13-6 lead due in part to six quick points by Ae'Rianna Harris. Purdue used a 9-0 run to take its first double-digit lead 16-6 midway through the period, as the Spartan offense went cold. A much-needed McCutcheon 3-pointer stopped the drought, but the Boilermakers led 20-11 at the break.
In the second quarter, the Michigan State offense still struggled to find its rhythm, but was able to stay in the game forcing five turnovers in a span of 3:22. After a pair of Clouden free throws, MSU cut it to a 25-19 deficit, but 3-pointers by McLaughlin and Cassidy Hardin pushed the Boilermaker lead back into double figures. At the end of the second quarter, the Spartans trailed, 37-26.
Hampered by injuries and mounting foul trouble, the Spartan struggled to stay within reach in the third period. The Boilermakers led by as many as 15 points in the quarter. Michigan State was able to trim it to a 11-point deficit, but Purdue continued to find answers to the MSU surges.
The Spartan offense came to life in the final period scoring 25 points. Colley scored six-straight points for the Spartans, as MSU fought to stay in the game. Michigan State used a 6-0 run to make it a 59-50 game with 3:58 remaining in the game. The Spartans were able to cut the deficit down to six points, but were unable to get any closer.
