EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's soccer picked up another three points in Big Ten play on Sunday afternoon, shutting out Ohio State 1-0 at DeMartin Stadium in East Lansing.
The Spartans move to 9-1-3 overall with a 4-1-1 mark in league competition. It was the team's first win against Ohio State since 2014 and the first shutout by Lauren Kozal since Sept. 19 at Indiana.
The game didn't kick in to high gear until nearly 30 minutes into the second half. In the first half, Michigan State held an advantage on shots with seven, while Ohio State totaled five. Each team had just one shot on goal in the half. Kozal recorded one save in goal.
An exciting second half led to the 1-0 victory for the Spartans. The Buckeyes threatened in the eighth minute with a free kick opportunity at the top right of the arc. The shot went high to keep the score at 0-0 and giving the Spartans possession.
Taking the ball up the right side of midfield for the Green & White was Lauren DeBeau. Dribbling and dodging past two Buckeye defenders, DeBeau took a shot in between the defensive line at the top right of the box, sending the strike high into the top left corner of the net for the Spartan goal.
Hopes of a win for the Spartans were momentarily put into question just three minutes later. A handball was called in the Michigan State box to give Ohio State a penalty kick opportunity. The shot by Izzy Rodriguez went low and to the right, and Kozal was right there for the diving save, batting the ball out of the box before diving on top of it to secure the save and the no-good PK. Regulation play ended two minutes later to secure the Spartan victory.
Michigan State led with 17 shot attempts, four taken on goal. Ava Cook had seven of those shots with two attempts on target. Kozal tallied four saves for the Green & White in her sixth shutout game of the season.
The Spartans are back in action this Thursday, Oct. 14. They take to the road, heading to Ann Arbor for a game against Michigan at 7 p.m.
