Spartans in 14th Place Following Tar Heel Invitational First Round

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's women's golf team shot an 8-over par 296 and is in 14th place among 19 teams following the first round of play on Friday at the Tar Heel Invitational, being played at the Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Virginia Tech shot a 6-under par 282 and leads the field, one shot ahead of second place Wake Forest (5-under par 283). Kentucky is in third place at 4-under par284, while Michigan and Clemson are tied for fourth place with scores of 3-under par 285.

The Spartans started out strong with six birdies in the opening seven holes and, as a team, made the turn at 2-under par, but struggled on the back nine to finish with an 8-over par 296.
Michigan State was led by junior Nina Rissi (Barcelona, Spain), who is tied for 27th place at even par 72.
Senior Valery Plata (Floridablanca, Colombia/Colegio La Quinta del Puente), who won the Tar Heel Invitational in 2019, is tied for 53rd place at 2-over par 74.
Freshman Brooke Biermann (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) and sophomore Valentina Rossi (Rosario, Argentina) are tied for 64th place at 3-over par 75, and sophomore Leila Raines (Galena, Ohio/Olentangy Berlin) is tied for 71st place at 4-over par 76.
Senior Haylin Harris (Carmel, Ind./Carmel), playing as an individual, shot a 3-under par 69 and is tied for fourth place in the field of 96 golfers.
The second round tees off at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
