PLYMOUTH, Mich. – Michigan State made its 2021-22 season debut on Saturday night with a 3-0 exhibition-game loss to the U.S. National Team Development Program's Under-18 Team at USA Hockey Arena.
The Spartans outshot the U.S. skaters, 26-24, but couldn't solve goaltender Dylan Silverstein, who made several quality saves in the opening period and again in the third when MSU had two power plays.
"It was good to work out the kinks. Our guys haven't played in six months but period after period, we did some things better and our pace picked up,'' MSU coach Danton Cole said.
"It was a good, fast game and we had some good scoring chances. We had lots of guys in different situations and everybody played. We would have loved to have gotten a win out of it, but at the same time this will be good for us to get ready for next Friday.''
Michigan State opens the regular season next Friday and Saturday with a non-conference series against Air Force at Munn Arena.
The U.S. team, which plays at Notre Dame on Sunday, is 4-0-1 overall.
The U-18s scored one goal early in the first period and erupted for two goals within 25 seconds in the first two minutes of the middle period to go up 3-0.
Senior goalie Drew DeRidder started and played the first 30 minutes and 57 seconds, making 12 saves and giving up three goals. He faced 11 shots in the first period and made several quality saves.
Pierce Charleson, a sophomore, took over for DeRidder midway through the second period and did not allow a goal. He faced three shots in the second period and six in the third.
"We only gave up nine shots the second half of the game and we felt better about that, and then we had some chances,'' Cole said.
Cruz Lucius scored the U.S. team's first two goals – at 5:50 of the first period, off a 2-on-1 break, and at 1:39 of the second period, on a one-timer from the left circle.
Cutter Gabriel made it 3-0 just 25 seconds later at 2:04.
The Spartans were 0-for-3 on the power play while the U.S. team also failed to score on three power-play opportunities.
Cole said special teams were a bright spot
"We did a nice job on the penalty kill and the power play,'' he said. "On the second power play (in the third period), we had three back-door (chances) and missed the tip. It was there but we just couldn't get a stick on it.
"Overall, it was mostly positive. We can take a lot of good lessons out of this and good video and get ready for Air Force.''
