Men's Tennis Completes Day Two of Drobac/Beeman Invite

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State men's tennis competed in the second and third rounds of play at the Drobac/Beeman Invite on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans started out day two with a win in the second round of doubles action and two in round three. Anthony Pero and Luke Baylis teamed up and defeated their opponents from Marquette, 7-5. Josh Portnoy and Kazuki Matsuno won in a close battle 7-6, against Indiana's Rodgers and Basavereddy.
Round two of singles play resulted in two more wins for the Green & White. Portnoy had his second win of the day, earning a victory in straight sets against his opponent from Indiana, 6-4, 6-1. Baylis took a battle with Marquette's Dragovic into three sets. After winning 6-1 in the first set, Baylis came back from a second-set 3-6 deficit to win in a 10-5 decision in the final set.
The highlight of the day came when the Spartans earned six wins in the third round of singles action. Portnoy and Baylis each picked up wins again in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 against their opponents. Jarreau Campbell came up with a win against Western Michigan's Caballer, 6-3, 6-4. Carson Gates also took on a foe from WMU and came back from behind after a 0-6 loss in the first set to win the next two, 6-2, 10-8 and claim the victory.
First-year Max Sheldon impressed again for the Spartans with a back-and-forth battle with his opponent from Northwestern. The first set went into a tiebreaker and ended in Sheldon's favor, 7-6 (3). When the Wildcats took the second set 7-5, Sheldon bounced back in a third-set decision to win it 10-5.
"We had a slow start in the morning dropping some tough matches, but responded well and finished the day strong with some great wins," head coach Gene Orlando said. "Excited to take the momentum into the final matches tomorrow!"
The Spartans wrap up competition at the Drobac/Beeman Invite tomorrow with the fourth rounds of singles and doubles competition.
