Field Hockey Unable to Get Past No. 8 Maryland

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State could not sustain enough offensive pressure on Friday afternoon, suffering a 4-0 loss to No. 8 Maryland in Big Ten field hockey action at Ralph Young Field.
Playing in its annual Pink Game for breast cancer awareness, the Spartans shifted to 7-6 overall and now hold a 0-6 record in the conference. The Terrapins improved to 11-5 on the season and 2-4 in league play.
In a game that saw Maryland outshoot the Green and White, 26-1, and have a 14-0 edge in penalty corners, the Terps got started early with a goal from Margot Lawn in the second minute of action. Lawn had possession in front with her back to MSU senior goalkeeper Monique Jardell, turned around and fired a low shot past Jardell with just 1:20 gone in the contest.
A scoring chance by Spartan senior Lia Sinisi failed shortly after Lawn's tally, and Nathalie Fiechter made it 2-0 UMD early in the second frame, scoring off a Riley Donnelly assist following a penalty corner.
Maryland got two quick goals at the start of the second half from Taylor Mason and Maura Verleg. Mason scored in the 34th minute when Julianna Tornetta fed her from her right side, and Mason connected on a shot from the top of the circle that beat Jardell. Verleg's goal came in the 36th minute, deflecting home a Donnelly shot in traffic on a penalty corner.
The Spartans kept Maryland off the board the final 24:55 of the game, but were not able to chip into the Terrapin lead before the last buzzer sounded.
A five-save performance from Jardell was not enough to prevent the losing decision, while UMD's Noelle Frost recorded her fifth shutout of the year in the victory.
Junior Hannah Jarvie and Lawn both received green cards exactly 40 seconds in the fourth quarter, the only cards handed out by officials on Friday.
Michigan State hosts Penn State in its home finale on Sunday, Oct. 24. That game is set for 2 p.m. on the Big Ten Network. The contest will also see a Senior Day ceremony held for Sinisi, Maddie Babineau, Cara Bonshak, Lori Mack and Meredith Ross.
