Giron, Byrnes Pace Cross Country at EMU Fall Classic

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Sophomore Fatima Giron took the top spot in the women's race and freshman Patrick Byrnes finished second in the men's race on Friday afternoon, as the Michigan State men's and women's cross country teams sent a total of 21 runners to the Eastern Michigan Fall Classic at Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter, Mich.
With both sides racing a 5K distance (3.11 miles), the men went first with six attached and four unattached Spartans taking part. Byrnes, running unattached, posted a 15:00.8 time that was just two seconds behind the winner, Derrick Simmons of Michigan. Junior Joshua Smith came in third place with a personal record time of 15:08.4, and unattached freshman Jack Pennewell finished fourth at 15:10.8. Placing 11th was sophomore Tyler Pritchett with a time of 15:25.0, while unattached freshman Drew Seabase finished 12th (15:31.5) and junior Justin Ferraro took 13th (15:32.6). Redshirt junior Jack Huber finished with the 19th-best time at a PR of 15:39.5, followed by sophomore Hunter Zartman in 20th at a PR of 15:41.9. Rounding out the men's runners were unattached freshman Gage Killewald (22nd – 16:25.5) and junior Jalen Smith (23rd – 16:27.7).
In the women's 5k race, Giron (18:07.3) and junior Courtney Krupp (PR 18:10.9) led all female runners by taking first and second, respectively. Unattached freshman Kate Stewart-Barnett took home third place with an 18:22.8 time, and Noelle Adriaens posted a top-5 finish as well with a fifth-place time of 18:28.6. Freshman Sophia Lucki, running unattached, placed seventh at 18:39.9, with junior Elizabeth Dalrymple (Eighth – PR 18:43.2) and redshirt junior Annika Linzmeier (Ninth – 18:54.1) coming in right behind Lucki. Coming in 11th at a PR of 19:25.6 was sophomore Madison Price, and unattached freshman Tess Piper was next in 13th with a 19:46.6 time. Junior Abigail Lee finished 15th by posting a 20:11.7 PR time, and sophomore Margaret Coney placed 19th with a time of 20:58.5.
"Today we saw effort and focus out of our team," said Director of Cross Country/Track & Field Lisa Breznau. "We saw athletes competing by active decision making and forward thinking. The tone of today influences our team energy and cohesion as well as our sense of purpose leading into the championship portion of our season."
Giron became the first Spartan to take the top spot at the EMU Fall Classic since Mackenzie Weiler in 2017 (17:51.7).
Michigan State begins its championship season next Friday, Oct. 29 at the Big Ten Championships in University Park, Pa. The Spartan women will look to defend their B1G title from last season, while the Spartan men will try to improve upon a fourth-place finish in 2020-21.
