Women's Soccer Picks up Road Victory Against Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Michigan State women's soccer picked up a big win on the road against Iowa on Sunday afternoon, excelling on offense in the final minutes to come back from behind and defeat the Hawkeyes, 2-1.
The Spartans move to 8-1-3 on the season and 3-1-1- in Big Ten play, picking up wins against Iowa, Minnesota and Indiana. Two of the three victories were wins on the road.
The Spartans started out slow in the first half, conceding one goal to the Hawkeyes in the 13th minute. Iowa's Samantha Cary found the open net to give a 1-0 lead to the home team. Michigan State threatened several times in the half but were unable to capitalize despite leading in both shots and shots on goal. At roughly the 20-minute mark, the Spartans came up with five straight shots, three of which landed on target. Lauren DeBeau, Ava Cook, Zivana Labovic and Miranda Hart all had attempts to kickstart the offensive charge for the Green & White.
The second half saw Michigan State fight back for the victory. Ahead of the pack in the 70th minute, Ava Cook charged toward the Iowa goal, winning a battle for the ball against Hawkeye goalkeeper Mona Wilhelm. The net was wide open for Cook to take the strike and earn the equalizer.
It only took nine minutes for the Spartans to score again, this time with the game-winner. Gia Wahlberg took a long strike that bounced off the crossbar. With the Iowa goalkeeper still recovering from the attempted save, Jordyn Wickes charged the net to bump the ball into goal, giving Michigan State the 2-1 lead. The Hawkeyes were kept scoreless for the final ten minutes to give the Spartans another conference win.
Michigan State outshot the Hawkeyes 25-19 in the match, holding a 12-6 advantage in shots taken on goal. Goalkeeper Lauren Kozal had several key saves in the contest, totaling five while allowing Iowa just one goal.
The Spartans enter a week off from competition before returning to their home field on Sunday, Oct. 10. They face off against Ohio State at 1 p.m. at DeMartin Stadium.
