OSU Rallies in Third to Secure Series Split

Michigan State fell in the second game of the series at Ohio State on Saturday, dropping a 5-1 decision to the Buckeyes.

MSU entered the final minutes of the third trailing 3-1, but gave up two goals in the final 1:51 for the final margin.

Patrick Guzzo had a goal and an assist for the Buckeyes, including the first score of the game skating shorthanded. Josh Nodler had the Spartan strike in the second period, netting a power-play tally for his second score of the weekend.

Ohio State jumped on the board early with Guzzo's shorthanded tally just over a minute into a major penalty taken by his team. OSU killed the remainder of the penalty and held MSU to 1-for-3 on the man advantage, despite taking seven penalties for 33 minutes.

Drew DeRidder made 29 saves and surrendered four goals, while Jakub Dobes made 19 for Ohio State

MSU was outshot 34-20, but shots were 23-19 over the second two periods of play.

GAME SYNOPSIS

FIRST PERIOD: The Buckeyes took a major penalty just 1:09 into the game, sending Quinn Preston off the ice for the remainder of the game and giving the Spartans a five minute power play. Just over a minute in, OSU's Patrick Guzzo forced a turnover in the neutral zone and went in alone on DeRidder, opening the scoring with his first goal of the season. In all, Ohio State took four penalties for 27 minutes in the opening period, but held that 1-0 lead headed into the locker room.

SECOND PERIOD: Midway through the period, the Spartans got the equalizing tally when Griffin Loughran had the puck below the goal line on the left side and found Nodler just inside the circle at the hash marks, and the junior put away his second goal of the weekend at 11:47. The Buckeyes took back the lead on a Mark Cheremeta goal at 16:18, when he batted down the puck from midair and one-timed it from the top of the hash marks. OSU had a 12-9 edge in shots in the period.

THIRD PERIOD: The Buckeyes added to their lead midway through the third period, when a blast from the left point by Ryan O'Connell was tipped over the shoulder of DeRidder for a 3-1 advantage. Trailing by a pair and heading into the final two minutes, the Spartans sent DeRidder to the bench in favor of an extra skater, and Gustaf Westlund put one into the empty cage for a 4-1 lead. Ohio State tacked on a fifth at 19:08 from Jaedno Leslie.
