Field Hockey Shut Out by No. 1 Iowa

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Facing the top-ranked squad in the country for the second-straight game, the Michigan State field hockey was unable to generate any offense Friday afternoon in a 5-0 loss to No. 1 Iowa at Ralph Young Field in East Lansing, Mich.

Missing four of its usual starters, MSU suffered its third Big Ten defeat to shift the Spartans' record to 6-3 overall and 0-3 in the league standings. For the Hawkeyes, they remained perfect at 13-0, sitting at 5-0 in the Big Ten.

Esme Gibson kicked off the Iowa scoring in the fifth minute after a pass from Ellie Holley, shooting on the run to beat Michigan State senior goalkeeper Monique Jardell in front.

The Spartans kept the Hawkeyes at bay until the 24th minute, when Annika Herbine inbounded a pass on a penalty corner, with Anthe Nijziel taking the shot that found the back of the goal for the second Iowa tally.

Gibson added her second score of the game at the 35:45 mark, racing past the MSU defenders at the top of the circle to fire a shot past Jardell.

Lokke Stribos joined in on the scoring in the 39th minute when she put home a shot following a penalty corner.

The lone MSU shot came in the 52nd minute, when junior Merel Hanssen put one wide of the Iowa net.

Alex Wesneski closed out the Hawkeye scoresheet at the 52:48 mark with a goal that was assisted by Lieve Schalk.

Grace McGuire picked up her 13th win of the season, playing all 60 minutes for Iowa. Jardell suffered the losing decision despite seven saves in 38:46 of action, while fellow senior Jade Arundell made four saves in relief duty.

The Green and White will close the weekend with their final non-conference game of the season, playing at Miami on Sunday. That contest with the Redhawks is slated for 1 p.m.
