EAST LANSING, Mich. – Members of the Michigan State men's tennis team wrapped up the first day of the Western Michigan Invite today in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
The Spartans swept their matches in doubles action, picking up four wins and adding a win in singles play. Jack Winkler, Jarreau Campbell, Reed Crocker and Nick Williams are representing the Green & White at the invite.
"Great start in doubles going 4-0, however singles was a struggle going 1-3," head coach Gene Orlando said. "Great opportunities to bounce back tomorrow with two doubles and eight singles matches. There's no doubt we will make the tactical adjustments and continue to grow and improve and get some wins!"
In singles competition, Crocker came up with the sole win for MSU. A battle with Butler's Karr went into three sets to give Crocker the victory. The sophomore battled back from a 2-6 deficit in the first set to win the second set 6-1 and the third-set tiebreaker, 10-5.
Both doubles pairs for the Spartans went 2-0 in day one. The team of Crocker and Winkler defeated Chicago State's Suler and Plaza in extra rounds, 7-6(5). Later in the day they defeated Huete and Michael of Butler, 6-4.
Campbell and Williams teamed up for their two wins. They defeated home team Western Michigan's Kuszynski and Arzhankin 7-5, and Brennan and Dickson from Butler, 6-4.
The Spartans return to action tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the WMU Sorensen tennis courts.
