East Lansing, Mich. – Three Michigan State women's golfers are among a group of the 60 best players in Latin America competing this week at the Women's Amateur Latin America Championship, sponsored by the ANNIKA Foundation.
The event, hosted by Annika Sorenstam, will be held at the Pilar Golf Club in Buenos Aires, Argentina from Thursday, Nov. 18 to Sunday, Nov. 21.
The Spartans will be represented by senior Valery Plata (Floridablanca, Colombia/Colegio La Quinta Del Puente), junior Nina Rissi (Barcelona, Spain) and sophomore Valentina Rossi (Rosario, Argentina).
Plata and Rossi, who both played in the semifinals of the U.S. Women's Amateur (Plata in 2020 and Rossi in 2021), played earlier this month in the Spirit International Golf Championship in Texas. They were selected to play in the event, which featured the best amateur golfers from 20 countries and four continents. Plata played for her native Colombia and Rossi for Argentina.
This week's event in Argentina, which was canceled last year due to the pandemic, features the leading 60 Latin American golfers in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. Of the 60 players, 45 are playing college golf in the United States.
The winner of the event earns an invitation to play in the 2022 AIG Women's Open, the Women's Amateur Championship and the Hilton Grand Vacations ANNIKA Invitation. The runner-up will gain places in the South American Amateur Championship and the top three will qualify for the next edition of the WALA.
