EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State women's tennis pairing of graduate student Mary Lewis and senior Maja Pietrowicz are set to take part in the 2021 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Fall Championships this week.
Competing in the doubles main draw starting Thursday, Nov. 4, the Spartan duo will open with Round-of-32 action at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, California. Lewis and Pietrowicz face Old Dominion's Tatsiana Sasnouskaya and Yuliia Starodubtseva at 1:30 p.m. PT.
Ranked No. 28 in the nation during the preseason, the MSU pairing are the first Spartans to qualify for this event (or its predecessor, the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships) in either singles or doubles play.
After going 8-4 in doubles action last season, the Lewis/Pietrowicz combo earned a berth in the ITA All-American Championships last month, where they defeated the 41st-ranked pair, Emma Atonaki and Tamara Racine from Mississippi State, by an 8-6 score. The MSU duo then fell in the Round-of-16 to No. 3 Tatiana Makarova and Jayci Goldsmith from Texas A&M, 8-1.
The Spartan pair then put together a strong run at the ITA Super Regionals two weeks ago, winning back-to-back matches on the opening day to advance to the semifinal round of the doubles main draw, beating Julia Fliegner and Merri Kelly from rival Michigan, 8-7(3), before winning an 8-7(7) match against Notre Dame's Julia Andreach and Carrie Beckman. Lewis and Pietrowicz then fell in the semifinals, 8-3, to Ohio State's Irina Cantos Siemers and Sydni Ratliff.
Following Lewis and Pietrowicz's run at the ITA National Fall Championships, Michigan State returns to action with the spring portion of its schedule on Jan. 22 at Notre Dame.
