Men's Tennis Wraps Up Day Two of Big Ten Indoors

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's tennis completed the next two rounds of doubles action and the start of singles play at the Big Ten Indoor tournament on Friday.
"Overall a great day of winning and growing collectively as a team, and we get to do it all again tomorrow!" head coach Gene Orlando said.
The highlights of the day included five singles and four doubles wins in the main bracket, as well as two consolation wins in the back draw for the Spartans. Starting out with the next round of doubles in the morning, the duo of Kazuki Matsuno and Nick Williams defeated their opponents from Wisconsin, 7-6(3). The pair will move on in the bracket and face Jared Pratt and Robin Parts, also of Wisconsin, in the finals of the West main doubles draw.
Two pairs of Spartans, Reed Crocker and Max Sheldon as well as Jarreau Campbell and Graydon Lair move on to the finals of the Southwest doubles bracket. Crocker and Sheldon won 6-4 against foes from Indiana, while Campbell and Lair bested Goli and Bengsston from Northwestern, 6-4. Carson Gates and Luke Baylis won their morning matchup against Illinois to move ahead to the finals of the North bracket, facing Wildcats Trice Pickens and Felix Nordby Sunday.
In singles action, Max Sheldon took the lead for the Green & White. The freshman defeated Gleb Blekher from Northwestern in a three set battle, 4-6, 7-6 (6), 10-5 in the morning. He then took on Nick Beaty of rival Michigan, winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. He will continue on in the main draw round of 16 tomorrow.
"Max Sheldon continues to improve with every tournament we play," Orlando commented. "It's great to see the growth since his arrival this summer. His hard work is showing up in all his matches."
Also in singles, Lair won his first match of the day in straight sets against Bengsston, 6-4, 6-4. In the round of 32, he was bested by Roni Hietaranta of Nebraska. Josh Mukherjee defeated Mac Rogers of Indiana in the round of 64 before falling to Michigan's Patrick Nordby in the second round. Jack Winkler won his first match of the day in straight sets, earning a 6-2 6-2 victory over Julen Morgan of Purdue.
