Wrestling Picks Up Two Victories on Saturday

Spartans Win Final Seven Bouts Against Baldwin Wallace, Shut Out Olivet
OLIVET, Mich. – The Michigan State wrestling team earned a pair of wins Saturday night in the Cutler Event Center, earning a 37-9 victory over Division III power Baldwin Wallace before shutting out host Olivet, 41-0.

Moving to 5-0 in dual meets, the Spartans took 18 of its 20 bouts for the evening and had 12 bonus-point victories.

Opening the Spartans' first match of the night, graduate student Julian Saldana went toe-to-toe with former Ohio State wrestler Jacob Decatur for Baldwin Wallace before dropping a 3-2 decision in the 125 bout. Redshirt senior and 133-pounder Rayvon Foley followed up with a 22-9 major decision over Jaden Hinton, but Zak Anderson put the Yellow Jackets back in front, 9-4, with a 5:00 pin of redshirt sophomore Jordan Hamdan in the 141 battle.

MSU responded by taking the final seven bouts, earning bonus points in each of the last six wins. Sophomore Eddie Homrock came out with a 6-3 decision at 149 over Michael Petrella, followed by fellow sophomore Chase Saldate getting an 8-0 major decision in the 157 bout with Stan Bleich, and a third sophomore, Caleb Fish, getting a 9-0 major decision at 165 against Dalton Leightner.

Keeping the momentum, redshirt juniors Nathan Jimenez and Layne Malczewski both pinned their opponents, as Jimenez got the fall 35 seconds into his 174 bout with Donovan Palmer while Malczewski got his pin of 184-pound Lucas Salmon at the 3:57 mark. Redshirt seniors Cameron Caffey and Brad Wilton capped off the first match, as the 197-pound Caffey had 17-3 major decision against Doug Byrne and Wilton pinned Jarod Miller at the 6:07 mark of the heavyweight bout.

Going right into the showdown with the host Comets, sophomore Tristan Lujan made his first appearance at 125 since the Michigan State Open after dealing with an injury, recording the fall over Emmett Kettel 1:39 into the match. Foley was next, getting a 18-2 technical fall against Robert Davids in the 133 battle, while Hamdan bounced back for a sudden victory 6-4 decision against Reese Wallis at 141. Homrock kept the Spartans rolling at 149, racking up a 15-3 major decision in his matchup with Christian Lenon.

The Spartans had a close one at 157, as redshirt senior Jaden Enriquez had to fight back for a 11-7 decision over Ramiro Guerrero, while Fish wrestled to an 8-1 winning decision in the 165 bout with Dylan Briggs. Jimenez continued his strong night with an 8-3 decision over Olivet 174-pounder Owen Guilford, and Malczewski had his second pin of the evening with a 2:11 fall over Justin Carnahan at 184. Caffey followed that with a 15-0 technical fall against Hunter Caister in the 197 bout, and Wilton completed the sweep of Olivet when his reversal move in the waning moments of the bout earned him a 2-1 decision over Dominick Wilson at 285.

The first period was scoreless, but Decatur got the quick escape in the second and notched a takedown before Saldana escaped, while Saldana had another escape early in the third but could not pick up any more points, as Decatur scored the narrow 3-2 decision.

Foley and Hinton had a high scoring first, as both scored two takedowns and two escapes before Foley got his third takedown and a four-point near fall to go up, 12-6. Hamdan then got a reversal after starting down in the second, but Anderson broke free. Hamdan then took down Anderson, but Anderson reversed and pinned Hamdan as time expired in period two.

Homrock and Petrella went scoreless in the opening period, but Homrock escaped in the second. Petrella then escaped to start the third, but Homrock picked up points on a Petrella stalling call and a  takedown. Homrock then added another takedown after Petrella escaped before letting Petrella up one more time, finishing with a 6-3 decision for MSU.

Saldate picked up a penalty point on Bleich in the first and escaped quickly in the second before tacking on a takedown and building up riding time the rest of the frame. Another stalling call on Bleich in the third gave Saldate another point, while a late takedown and riding time gave Saldate the 8-0 major decision.

Fish recorded a takedown midway through the first period and got the second-period reversal to go with a stall point. The third went similar, as Fish had quick takedown and another stall point to close out the bout, adding riding time for the 9-0 major decision.

Byrne escaped early in the third, but Caffey was awarded another takedown before adding four near-fall points and the riding time bonus at the end to get the 17-3 major decision.
