Wrestling Picks Up Two Victories on Saturday

OLIVET, Mich. – The Michigan State wrestling team earned a pair of wins Saturday night in the Cutler Event Center, earning a 37-9 victory over Division III power Baldwin Wallace before shutting out host Olivet, 41-0.

Moving to 5-0 in dual meets, the Spartans took 18 of its 20 bouts for the evening and had 12 bonus-point victories.

Opening the Spartans' first match of the night, graduate student Julian Saldana went toe-to-toe with former Ohio State wrestler Jacob Decatur for Baldwin Wallace before dropping a 3-2 decision in the 125 bout. Redshirt senior and 133-pounder Rayvon Foley followed up with a 22-9 major decision over Jaden Hinton, but Zak Anderson put the Yellow Jackets back in front, 9-4, with a 5:00 pin of redshirt sophomore Jordan Hamdan in the 141 battle.

MSU responded by taking the final seven bouts, earning bonus points in each of the last six wins. Sophomore Eddie Homrock came out with a 6-3 decision at 149 over Michael Petrella, followed by fellow sophomore Chase Saldate getting an 8-0 major decision in the 157 bout with Stan Bleich, and a third sophomore, Caleb Fish, getting a 9-0 major decision at 165 against Dalton Leightner.

Keeping the momentum, redshirt juniors Nathan Jimenez and Layne Malczewski both pinned their opponents, as Jimenez got the fall 35 seconds into his 174 bout with Donovan Palmer while Malczewski got his pin of 184-pound Lucas Salmon at the 3:57 mark. Redshirt seniors Cameron Caffey and Brad Wilton capped off the first match, as the 197-pound Caffey had 17-3 major decision against Doug Byrne and Wilton pinned Jarod Miller at the 6:07 mark of the heavyweight bout.

Going right into the showdown with the host Comets, sophomore Tristan Lujan made his first appearance at 125 since the Michigan State Open after dealing with an injury, recording the fall over Emmett Kettel 1:39 into the match. Foley was next, getting a 18-2 technical fall against Robert Davids in the 133 battle, while Hamdan bounced back for a sudden victory 6-4 decision against Reese Wallis at 141. Homrock kept the Spartans rolling at 149, racking up a 15-3 major decision in his matchup with Christian Lenon.

The Spartans had a close one at 157, as redshirt senior Jaden Enriquez had to fight back for a 11-7 decision over Ramiro Guerrero, while Fish wrestled to an 8-1 winning decision in the 165 bout with Dylan Briggs. Jimenez continued his strong night with an 8-3 decision over Olivet 174-pounder Owen Guilford, and Malczewski had his second pin of the evening with a 2:11 fall over Justin Carnahan at 184. Caffey followed that with a 15-0 technical fall against Hunter Caister in the 197 bout, and Wilton completed the sweep of Olivet when his reversal move in the waning moments of the bout earned him a 2-1 decision over Dominick Wilson at 285.

Michigan State returns to action on Jan. 1-2, when the Spartans head to the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn.

125: Jacob Decatur (BW) dec. Julian Saldana (MSU), 3-2
The first period was scoreless, but Decatur got the quick escape in the second and notched a takedown before Saldana escaped, while Saldana had another escape early in the third but could not pick up any more points, as Decatur scored the narrow 3-2 decision.

133: Rayvon Foley (MSU) maj. dec. Jaden Hinton (BW), 22-9
Foley and Hinton had a high scoring first, as both scored two takedowns and two escapes before Foley got his third takedown and a four-point near fall to go up, 12-6. The Spartan then had an escape 10 seconds into the second frame and turned it into another takedown before letting Hinton escape near the end of the period. Hinton added an escape in the onset of the third, but Foley scored his fifth takedown and another four near-fall points before Hinton got free. A riding time bonus secured

141: Zak Anderson (BW) fall over Jordan Hamdan (MSU), 5:00
Hamdan had the early takedown and built up his riding time in the first before letting Anderson escape, and scored another takedown before the end of the period. Hamdan then got a reversal after starting down in the second, but Anderson broke free. Hamdan then took down Anderson, but Anderson reversed and pinned Hamdan as time expired in period two.

149: Eddie Homrock (MSU) dec. Michael Petrella (BW), 6-3
Homrock and Petrella went scoreless in the opening period, but Homrock escaped in the second. Petrella then escaped to start the third, but Homrock picked up points on a Petrella stalling call and a takedown. Homrock then added another takedown after Petrella escaped before letting Petrella up one more time, finishing with a 6-3 decision for MSU.

157: Chase Saldate (MSU) maj. dec. Stan Bleich (BW), 8-0
Saldate picked up a penalty point on Bleich in the first and escaped quickly in the second before tacking on a takedown and building up riding time the rest of the frame. Another stalling call on Bleich in the third gave Saldate another point, while a late takedown and riding time gave Saldate the 8-0 major decision.

165: Caleb Fish (MSU) maj. dec. Dalton Leightner (BW), 9-0
Fish recorded a takedown midway through the first period and got the second-period reversal to go with a stall point. The third went similar, as Fish had quick takedown and another stall point to close out the bout, adding riding time for the 9-0 major decision.

174: Nathan Jimenez (MSU) fall over Donovon Palmer (BW), 0:35
Jimenez had a quick takedown and pinned Palmer only 35 seconds into the bout.

184: Layne Malczewski (MSU) fall over Lucas Salmon (BW), 3:57
Malczewski scored the early takedown and let Salmon up before adding another takedown in the closing seconds of the first. The MSU wrestler then had a reversal a couple ticks into the second period and had a two-point near fall before pinning Salmon 3:57 into the match.

197: Cameron Caffey (MSU) maj. dec. Doug Byrne (BW), 17-3
Byrne took a while to take down Caffey in the first but got the two points before Caffey escaped and had his own takedown. Caffey then started the second down but got free 15 seconds in, adding a takedown and four-point near fall in the closing seconds. Byrne escaped early in the third, but Caffey was awarded another takedown before adding four near-fall points and the riding time bonus at the end to get the 17-3 major decision.

285: Brad Wilton (MSU) fall over Jarod Miller (BW), 6:07
Wilton notched a takedown and a two-point near fall in the first period, adding an escape to open the second. MSU's heavyweight added another takedown in the waning seconds of the second, and had another about 30 seconds into the third frame, and pinned Miller at the 6:07 mark.

125: Tristan Lujan (MSU) fall over Emmett Kettel (OC), 1:39
Lujan came out in the first with the takedown before adding a four-point near fall and two-point near fall in quick succession, but Kettel got free before another Lujan takedown and near fall led to Lujan finishing the pin at the 1:39 mark.

133: Rayvon Foley (MSU) tech. fall over Robert Davids (OC), 18-2
Foley got the early takedown and four-point near fall before letting Davids free, but added another two takedowns sandwiching a Davids escape, along with ___. Two more takedowns in the second got Foley technical fall, 18-2.

141: Jordan Hamdan (MSU) dec. Reese Wallis (OC), SV-1, 6-4
Hamdan took Wallis down early, but Wallis escaped later on in the first. Hamdan got an escape in the second, but Wallis escaped and got a takedown on Hamden in the third, but Hamden escaped to tie it at 4-4 before the final buzzer. In the extra period, Hamdan notched the takedown to secure his 6-4 sudden victory decision.

149: Eddie Homrock (MSU) maj. dec. Christian Lenon (OC), 15-3
Homrock had an early takedown, adding a second and third takedown after escapes by Lenon in the opening round. A second-period escape from Lenon set up another Homrock takedown and a four-point near fall. Homrock tacked on one more takedown in the third to go with riding time for the 15-3 major decision.

157: Jaden Enriquez (MSU) dec. Ramiro Guerrero (OC), 11-7
Guerrero recorded the first-period takedown on Enriquez, but the Spartan recovered with an escape and had his own takedown of Guerrero later in the opening frame, but got dinged for a stall penalty in the final seconds. Period Two saw an Enriquez escape and takedown, but Guerrero had a reversal before Enriquez got free again, while Enriquez had another stalling called. The third period had Enriquez escape once more and get a late takedown to get the 11-7 decision.

165: Caleb Fish (MSU) dec. Dylan Briggs (OC), 8-1
Fish got the first takedown of the bout, but Briggs broke free in the first. The second period saw Fish add a two-point near fall to his score, and the third had Fish escape after starting down before adding a takedown late with riding time for an 8-1 decision.

174: Nathan Jimenez (MSU) dec. Owen Guilford (OC), 8-3
Guilford was able to get the late takedown in the first period, but Jimenez had the escape and takedown in the second. A Guilford escape in the third led to a Jimenez takedown and two-point near fall, with Jimenez getting riding time as well for the 8-3 MSU decision.

184: Layne Malczewski (MSU) fall over Justin Carnahan (OC), 2:11
Malczewski recorded two takedowns and a four-point near fall in the first, letting Carnahan escape once, but got the 2:11 fall.

197: Cameron Caffey (MSU) tech. fall over Hunter Caister (OC), 23-6
A quick Caffey takedown led to four more takedowns by the Spartan, adding a two-point near fall while Caister was allowed to escape four times. Caffey added an escape and takedown in the second before Caister escaped, but Caffey got another two takedowns in the frame.
