
Spartan Women Fall to West Virginia at West Palm Beach Invitational

Guards Nia Clouden and Dee Hagemann both scored in double figures in the loss.
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Spartan women's basketball closed out the West Palm Beach Invitational Tuesday with a 74-54 loss to West Virginia at the Student Life Center.
With a game-high 22 points, senior guard Nia Clouden now has 1,564 career points, passing Kalisha Keane for the No. 9 spot on the MSU all-time scoring list. Clouden ended the game going 10-for-11 from the free throw line. She now has two-straight games of double digit free throws after going 15-for-17 from the charity stripe against Florida Gulf Coast yesterday. Freshman guard DeeDee Hagemann was the only other Spartan in double figures with 13 points and five assists and four rebounds.
The Mountaineers were led by 21 points and 11 rebounds by Esmery Martinez.
The Spartans were hampered by a combination of lack of depth due to injury and tired legs after yesterday's double overtime game. Michigan State has now lost two-straight games and falls to 7-6 overall, ending non-conference action. West Virginia improved to 7-3 with the win.
After back-to-back treys, the Mountaineers took an early 10-6 lead midway trough the first period. The Spartans used a 12-2 run over 5:10 to run to go up 18-12. In the first quarter five different Spartan scored led by six points from Clouden.
West Virginia scored the first six of the second period to tie the score at 18-18. WVU then went on a 7-0 run to take the lead 25-20, before a Clouden layup. Michigan State' s lack of depth caught up to them in the second quarter, as it was out-scored 19-11 in the quarter. The Spartans were solid from the charity stripe, going 9-for-11. The Mountaineers did not get to the line at all in the period. Despite shooting only 26.7 in the first half, MSU only trailed, 31-29 at the half.
West Virginia came out hot in the third period, scoring quick points in the paint to open up a 39-31 advantage, leading to a MSU timeout at the 6:31 mark. The run grew to 10-0 as the Spartans ran out of steam in the second half and the WVU lead grew to 45-31. The Mountaineers ened the period with 16 points in the paint.
In the fourth quarter, the Spartans never stopped battling, but the Mountaineers always had a response. MSU got within nine points, but West Virginia used a 9-2 run to pull away, 61-47 with under six minutes remaining. From that point, the Mountaineers took as big a lead as 22 points after a Martinez jumper with 1:48 remaining.
After a break for the holiday, Michigan State returns to Big Ten Conference action, taking on Nebraska on Thursday, Dec. 30 at 2 p.m. at the Breslin Center.

- In the two day tournament, Nia Clouden averaged 36.0 points per game, including going 25-for-28 from the free throw line and 23-for-44 from the field. Both junior forward Taiyier Parks and freshman guard DeeDee Hagemann both averaged 11.0 ppg.
- Against West Viginia, Clouden and Hagemann are the only two players to score in double figures, scoring 22 and 13 points respectively.
