The Spartans start the season 2-0 for the first time since the 2014-15 season.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - With a dominating 6-1 win over Rutgers, the Michigan State women's tennis team improved to 2-0 in Big Ten action Sunday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
This is the first time since the 2014-15 season that Michigan State has started Big Ten play 2-0. That season, the Spartans started the season 5-0 in league action.
"It feels awesome to start 2-0 in the Big Ten. That is why we wanted to get some matches under our belt, so we could head into this sort of scenario more prepared. And that's how we were these last two days," MSU head coach Kim Bruno said. "I think even from yesterday to today we made even more adjustments, and finally had a little bit more of a comfortable win. It takes preparation and determination and consistency, and the girls should feel good about this heading into the rest of the season. Starting out 2-0 is huge for us."
Michigan State took the doubles points with dominating performances at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Senior Mary Lewis and junior Maja Pietrowicz defeated Maya Jacobs and Tess Fisher, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot. The doubles points was clinched emphatically when junior Lauren Lemonds and freshman Ayshe Can stopped Sydney Kaplan and Alisia Prinyarux, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot.
In singles action, Can put the Spartans up 2-0 with a win over Daira Cardenas at the No. 6 position with a straight set victory, 6-2, 6-2. Junior Lauren Lemonds moved the Spartans closer to victory with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Jaci Cochrane.
The match was clinched on court three with another straight set victory. After breezing through the first set, Pietrowicz battled in the second set to capture a 6-1, 6-4 win over Kaplan, as MSU led 4-0. Graduate student Samantha Memije was next to earn the win at the No. 2 spot, stopping Fisher, 6-2, 6-3. The final MSU win came with a hard-fought three-set win by junior Nicole Stephens over Chloe Brown, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot.
Michigan State now hits the road for four-straight matches. The Spartans take on Purdue on Feb. 20, before facing Indiana on Feb. 21.
