EAST LANSING – Nicolas Müller's goal with 3:57 to play in the third period broke a 1-1 tie and led the Michigan State hockey team past Arizona State, 2-1, on Monday night at Munn Ice Arena.
Jagger Joshua gave MSU a lead in the first period, while ASU's Demetrios Koumontzis tied the game in the final minutes of the second period, setting up another close finish between the teams.
"Every game with Arizona State is a tight battle," MSU head coach Danton Cole said. "It was nice to see the guys come out on top. I thought some things we did better last night and tonight in the first period we were really good. They took over in the second there with the three power plays. The third was decent battle back and forth and it was a nice play by Jagger to get the puck to the net. Usually in a game like this it's usually an ugly goal and that was an ugly one, but we enjoyed it and enjoy the win."
The Spartans outshot ASU 10-2 in the opening period and Joshua's goal one second after the expiration of a Spartan power play gave MSU a 1-0 lead. After Müller hit the post with a shot from the left circle, the puck got around to Kristof Papp in the right corner, who whipped it to Aiden Gallacher at the point. Gallacher threw the puck toward the net where Joshua controlled it, made a move and slid it past goaltender Cole Brady for his fourth goal of the season.
The Spartans skated off a pair of ASU power plays in the second, but couldn't make it three straight as Koumontzis got a loose puck in the right circle and put it past an outstretched Drew DeRidder to make it 1-1 with 1:26 to play in the period.
DeRidder made 16 saves in the third period help keep it a 1-1 game and wound up finishing with a total of 32.
The winning goal came after Mitchell Lewandowski was able to keep the puck in the ASU zone along the right side. Joshua got to the puck and took it to the net where a scrum ensued. Müller followed the play and was able to jam the loose puck into the net from just off the right post to put the Spartans ahead 2-1 with 3:57 to go.
The Spartans staved off ASU the rest of the way to hang on for the victory.
The Spartans head to Minnesota later this week to meet the No. 4 Golden Gophers on Friday (8 p.m. ET) and Saturday (6 p.m. ET) in Minneapolis.
