GENEVA, Ohio - Behind several strong running performances, the Spartan women led the way on day two of the Big Ten Indoor Championships Friday at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.Â
Due to COVID-19 protocols, the championship has been extended to three days. The day was split into two sessions with the men opening action and the women ending the day.
The first Spartan advancing to a Saturday final was junior Katie Osika in the mile. Osika had the top time in the mile with a time of 4:45.67. She was just shy of her PR 4:42.09, which was set at the B1G SPIRE Invitational on Feb. 13. Senior Aimee Piercy (4:55.32) will also reach the final for the Spartans.
Senior Brooke Bogan continued her strong indoor season by reaching the finals in the 60m dash. Bogan qualified for Saturday's final with a season-best time of 7.49. Today's race was her best race since the Big Ten Indoor Championship final last season, when she ran 7.44.
In the prelims of the 800m, freshman Alison Ziehl fell short of reaching the final, but earned a huge personal best with a time of 2:13.79. Her previous best time was 2:16.71 at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational on Jan. 16. Freshman Judith Rector (2:18.26) also added a PR in the event.Â
On the men's side, freshman Ryan Talbot scored points for Michigan State by finishing sixth in the heptathlon with 5,332 points. He increased his point total from his first collegiate heptathlon at the B1G SPIRE Invitational where accumulated 5,319 points.Â
In the men's mile, MSU did not have anyone reach the finals, but freshman Jeremy Kloss did set a new PR, crossing the finish line in 4:08.07.
On the final day of competition, men's action will begin with a quarter of events at 11 a.m., including the pole vault, high jump, shot put and the final of the men's mile. On the women's side, the pole vault will begin at 3:30 p.m.
