Michigan State Falls in Season Opener to Maryland, 2-0

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's field hockey team opened the 2020-21 season with a 2-0 loss to Maryland on Friday afternoon at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex.
The Spartans fall to 0-1 this season and will play Northwestern on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 2:30 p.m.
"It felt good to get out and compete," Head Coach Helen Knull said. "Defensively, we played a disciplined, well-connected game. We struggled to get much attack going and that is going to be a point of emphasis for tomorrow, working off of each other better and creating space to attack in numbers."
After a scoreless first quarter, Maryland got on the board first off a penalty corner two minutes into the second quarter. The Terrapins added a second goal just before halftime.
Maryland out-shot Michigan State, 18-2, and held an 8-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Junior goalkeeper Jade Arundell (County Kildare, Ireland/The Kings Hospital) made eight saves for the Spartans.
