East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State's rowing program is mourning the loss of Dick Belding, who passed away January 29 at the age of 92.Â
Â
Belding and his wife, Marie, purchased four boats (shells) for the Spartan rowing program. From some of the earliest days of the program, nearly all MSU rowers have benefited from the generosity of the Beldings.   Four shells bear his name: Belding's Dream, Belding's Dream II, the Sweet Marie, and the Silver Fox.

"While my short time at Michigan State did not allow me the privilege of meeting Dick Belding, there is no question the impact that his gifts had on the rowing program for all of our athletes," said Spartan head coach Kim Chavers. "Those gifts are especially meaningful that he supported women's athletics, and specifically the rowing program. It's my understanding that he 'bled green' and that he embodied being a Spartan for life. We are extending our sincere condolences to his entire family and all who loved him, and hope that we are able to provide a fitting tribute later this spring during our racing season."
