East Lansing, Mich. --Â Amanda Ling won both diving events on Friday evening as the Spartan swimming and diving teams began their two-day meet against Penn State.Â
Â
Ling, a senior, won both boards in a commanding performance in State College. She posted a score of 316.20 on the 1m board – the second-place finishers tied with a 260.18. A week ago, Ling posted an NCAA "A" cut for the zone diving championships on the 1M board in the squad's opening meet at Michigan. Friday's 316.20 was a personal career best.Â
Â
Ling's victory on the 3m board was just as impressive – she scored a 324.38, outscoring the second-place finisher by another significant margin (289.65). Her performance was an NCAA "B" qualifying score.Â
Â
"I was really, really impressed with Amanda's performance tonight," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "She was just really, really good and I am thrilled that she's already qualified on both boards in our first two meets, considering all of the hurdles that we've dealt with as a team since our season started.   I hope we have some of that same success tomorrow when we get back to the pool for the rest of the meet."
Â
Jakob Heberling returned to competition this week after missing last week's action at Michigan. He finished third in the 1m (283.05), behind the Penn State duo which finished 297.00 and 295.95.Â
Â
In addition to diving, the 1000m free was contested on Friday evening. For the women, Sophia Balow was fourth in a time of 10.25.65, Sarah Zofchak was fifth in 10:38.41, and Emma Inch sixth in 10:43.90. Guy Moskovich was the only Spartan in the men's race, and he clocked in a time of 9:46.35. Â
Â
The swimmers get into the bulk of the meet on Saturday. The women begin action at McCoy Natatorium at 10 am, followed by the men at 2:30 p.m.
