Michigan State Women’s Soccer Edged by Minnesota Monday

In an early morning battle, the Gophers topped the Spartans, 1-0.
LIVONIA, Mich. – Behind a late first-half goal, the Michigan State women's soccer team was stopped by Minnesota at St. Joe's Sports Dome in Livonia, Michigan on Monday morning.
The Spartans suffered their first loss of the season and stand 1-1-1 this season. Minnesota improves to 1-1-1 with the shutout win.
"The key to the game was that we didn't put any pressure on Minnesota early on in the game, and to their credit they put a ton of pressure on us and we struggled to get out. So we need to get our midfield rotation right and have a little more energy in terms of helping our backline. Our forward line's decision making in the first half was a little to protective; we went back a lot when we had a chance to go forward," MSU head coach Tom Saxton added.
Minnesota held possession for much of the first half, as the Spartans absorbed a barrage of Gopher shots. Starting in the 17th minute, Minnesota fired off four shots in three minutes. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Kozal collected two saves off of blasts from the Gophers' McKenna Buisman.
In the 42nd minute, Minnesota finally broke through. Sadie Harper's shot from nine-yards out was blocked and collected by Sophia Boham, who once again found Harper. Her second shot slipped past Kozal on the left side to give the Gophers the 1-0 lead. By the end of the first half, Minnesota had out-shot Michigan State, 11-0.
"Lauren has been fantastic in each of our games. She really kept us in the game for sure in the first half and made some great plays in the second half when they, had their opportunities. So, she has been outstanding, as solid as anyone on the team, and we need to do more to help her," Saxton added.
In the second half, the Spartan offense was able to create more chances with the midfield becoming more active. Sophomore Paige Webber earned the first shot of the game in the 52nd minute.
Michigan State was unable to capitalize in the final third, as Minnesota was able to keep the clean sheet.
For the game, the Gophers out-shot the Spartans 16-5. Overall, Michigan State ended the game with six save, including five by Kozal.
Michigan State now hits the road for pair of games. The Spartans take on Rutgers on Thursday, March 4 at 1 p.m., before facing Penn State on March 7.
