Michigan State Stopped by No. 19 Rutgers Thursday
3/4/2021 5:45:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Sam Sklarski scores her first goal of the season the loss.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's soccer opened a grueling five-game road swing with a 3-1 loss at No. 19 Rutgers on Thursday afternoon.
The Spartans now fall to 1-2-1 this season, while the Scarlet Knights improve to 3-1-0. Michigan State is now 0-6 all-time against Rutgers.
"We were pleased by the approach of the team, and we played well overall. In the second half, we took the right approach, but Rutgers had a lot of firepower, and eventually they wore us down. Overall, it was not a horrible performance, we just needed to get more out of it when we had the wind. Credit to Rutgers, they are a very good offensive team, and they made us pay in the second half.," MSU head coach Tom Saxton said.
Midway through the first half the Spartans had their second opportunity of the half. After a MSU, corner kick sophomore midfielder Raegan Cox's shot went wide of the goal in the 20th minute.
Before the first half ended, the Michigan State struck first. Junior midfielder Sam Sklarski scored her first goal of the season in the 41st minute. After a Rutgers foul, the re-start goal came with a header by Sklarski.
Rutgers wasted no time finding the equalizer early in the second half. Amirah Ali took the pass from Sara Brocious to tie the score in the 49th minute to tie the score, 1-1. The Scarlet Knights continued to apply the pressure in the second half.
Rutgers went on to add a pair of goals three minutes apart to take a 3-1 advantage. In the 74th minute, the Scarlet Knights scored an own goal. In the 77th minute, Rutgers added an insurance goal off the foot of Nneka Moneme.
The Spartans will next face No. 13 Penn State on Sunday, March 7 at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed on Big Ten Network+.
