
Spartans Complete Season Sweep of Maryland, Defeat Terrapins, 5-2

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State women's tennis team defeated Maryland, 5-2, on Friday at the Junior Tennis Champions Center in College Park, Maryland. The Spartans also topped the Terrapins in East Lansing on Feb. 13, 4-3.
MSU started things off by taking the doubles point, as Maja Pietrowicz and Mary Lewis beat Adela Josefova and Zoe Kulkarni, 6-2, on the second court, and Samantha Memije and Ayshe Can topped Vera Markovic and Minorka Miranda on court three, 6-3.
The Spartans claimed the first two singles matches to take a 3-0 lead with Can and Memije winning in straight sets at No. 6 and No. 3 singles, respectively.
No. 89 Ayana Akli beat Lewis at No. 1, 6-2, 6-3, and Eva Alexandrova got by Lauren Lemonds at No. 2, 7-6, 6-1, to cut MSU's lead to 3-2.
Pietrowicz clinched the dual for the Spartans with her 6-2, 7-6 victory on the fourth court against Josefova, while Nicole Stephens made the final 5-2 in favor of MSU with a three-set comeback win (4-6, 6-1, 6-4) over Kulkarni.
Michigan State (4-6, 4-5 Big Ten) returns to action Sunday to take on Rutgers at noon in Piscataway, New Jersey. Live stats and video will be available at scarletknights.com.
