Spartan Women’s Tennis Edged by Rutgers

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's tennis dropped the final match of its two-game road trip, 4-3, to Rutgers Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans now fall to 4-7 overall and 4-6 in Big Ten action. The Scarlet Knights improved to 1-7 with the close win.
Rutgers jumped out to a 1-0 lead, winning the doubles point. At the No. 3 doubles, Daira Cardenas and Jaci Cochrane defeated graduate student Samantha Memije and freshman Ayshe Can, 6-2. The doubles point was sealed at the No. 2 spot, when Alisa Prinyarux and Tess Fisher edged juniors Lauren Lemonds and Nicole Stephens, 6-3.
In singles action, the Spartans quickly tied the score at 1-1, when senior Mary Lewis beat Tess Fisher in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Chloe Brown put the Scarlet Knights back up with a win over junior Maja Pietrowicz, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot.
After Rutgers took a 3-1 advantage, the Spartans continued to fight. At the No. 3 position, Memije defeated Prinyarux in a come-from-behind battle, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. The Scarlet Knights clinched the match at the No. 1 spot. Jacobs stopped Lemonds in three sets, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4).
Michigan State takes a much-needed break and return to action on Sunday, March 21 against in-state rival Michigan in East Lansing at 2 p.m.
