EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State field hockey team jumped out to a 2-0 lead over seventh-ranked Penn State, but the Nittany Lions rallied for a 5-2 win on Friday afternoon at Ralph Young Field.
"What I told the team after the game was that there were a lot of positives from today," said MSU field hockey head coach Helen Knull. "We moved the ball well, we passed early, which was great, that was one of our goals and keys to the game today. We know Penn State has a lot of speed up front, so I thought we actually handled their pressure pretty well, but we cannot be reactive. So if there's a 50-50 ball or something, we have to go for those. So that's something that we have to improve on for Sunday, as the game progresses.
"We had two freshmen starting and playing in the backfield today. For them to step in, they did the job they had to do us for today, which is good and positive moving forward. But we got a little reactive in the third quarter, and ultimately, that's what gave them the goals."
The Spartans (1-5, 1-4 Big Ten) scored midway through the first quarter to take a quick 1-0 advantage. After a shot off a penalty corner, Celina Riccardo scored her first goal of the season off the deflection that then got past Nittany Lion goalkeeper Brie Barraco.
MSU took the 1-0 lead into halftime, and quickly scored just one minute into the third quarter to go up, 2-0. The goal again came off of a penalty corner, as Ellie Wheatley tipped in a blocked shot to tally her first goal of the season.
Penn State (3-3, 3-1 Big Ten) rallied to tie the game with two quick goals within a two minute span (34:59, 36:30) by Sophia Gladieux.
Gladieux notched her third goal of the quarter with 90 seconds left to give Penn State a 3-2 lead.
PSU added two more goals in the final quarter to put the game out of reach for the Spartans. Madison Hutson scored off a penalty corner at the 47:24 mark and was assisted by Bree Bednarski, while Gladieux tallied her fourth goal of the game with 1:48 remaining.
Penn State held a 15-7 advantage in shots and 9-2 in penalty corners in the game.
The two teams will meet again on Sunday, March 21 at noon at Ralph Young Field in a nonconference match.
