Michigan State Shut Out by Penn State to Close Weekend
3/21/2021 3:06:00 PM | Field Hockey
East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State gave up a pair of goals in the second half as Penn State beat the Spartans, 3-0, in a Big Ten field hockey game at Ralph Young Field on Sunday afternoon.
The loss was the fourth-straight for the Spartans, who fall to 1-6 overall, while Penn State improves to 4-3. The game did not count toward the Big Ten standings.
"We need to improve on our attack and take care of the opportunities we get to have outcomes," Head Coach Helen Knull said. "We had some improvement today from Friday and I thought we responded well after they scored. I'm proud of our effort and we did some things well defensively, but we're going to get back to training and be ready for next week."
The Nittany Lions wasted little time getting on the board as Anna Simon took a feed from Bree Bednarski off a penalty corner just over four minutes into the game to take a 1-0 lead.
Michigan State had a chance to tie the game just before the half, but a shot from the left of the goal by freshman Ashley Harlock (Livonia, Mich./Livonia Churchill) was saved by Penn State goalkeeper Brie Barraco.
The Spartans earned their first penalty corner of the game in the 37th minute and a shot from Nienke Bloemsaat (Oosterhout, The Netherlands/Sint-Oelbert Gymnasium) was again saved by Barraco.
The Nittany Lions extended their lead to 2-0 six minutes later when Madison Hutson's shot from the left of the circle beat MSU goalkeeper Monique Jardell (Granville, Ohio/Granville).
Penn State increased its lead to 3-0 with three minutes left when Sophia Gldieux took a feed from Anna Simon and blasted a shot from the top left arc.
The Nittany Lions had a 12-4 advantage in shots and an 8-3 edge in penalty corners.
Michigan State plays a pair of games next weekend at Iowa, the first game on Friday, March 26 (4 p.m.) and then on Sunday, March 28 (1 p.m.).
