EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State men's soccer will play its first game outside this season, hosting Ohio State on Wednesday, March 3 at Lansing Catholic High School. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
"It is great to just get outside. We trained outside today at Lansing Catholic, and we just really appreciate them hosting us. It felt great to get outside. Soccer is a sport that should be played outside as often as possible. We are really excited," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said.
The Spartans stand 1-2-1 this season, capturing their first win of the season against Penn State on March 6. The Buckeyes are 1-1-0 this year, earning a 1-0 win against Maryland last Saturday. Senior Joe Ortiz scored Ohio State's lone goal in the win at Maryland last Saturday to give the Buckeyes their first win against the Terps in College Park in series history.
Junior midfielder Jack Beck scored MSU's first goal of the season in the 87th minute off the pass from senior midfielder Michael Miller. The Spartans were able to create several chances against the Nittany Lions and got behind the defense more than they had in the previous two games.
So far this year, six different players have started every game including Miller, Beck, junior Farai Mutatu, redshirt-sophomore Will Perkins, redshirt-junior Hunter Morse and sophomore Nick Stone. Morse has recorded one shutout this season in goal with a 1.00 goals against average. Freshman Jack Zugay, junior Louis Sala and redshirt-junior Connor Brazil have each started two games this season in their first seasons with the team.
"I am looking for some consistency from the group. I am curious to see how some guys who have just gotten involved in the program younger guys, transfers respond. We just had a good result against Penn State; we played really well. I am looking forward to see how we handle that success. I think we have had a couple tough losses and the players have responded to the losses. We will see how we respond to a successful win," Rensing said.
Michigan State holds an overall record of 27-22-3 over Ohio State. The Spartans have won two straight in the series and four of the last five. Last season, MSU stopped OSU, 3-1, in East Lansing on Alumni Day. Mutatu, Conner George and Michael Wetungu all scored in the win. The Spartans are 13-8-2 overall at home against Ohio State.
Following the game against the Buckeyes, Michigan State will take on Northwestern on Thursday, March 11.
