Junior NIa Clouden leads Michigan State with 16 points.
SAN ANTONIO - No. 10-seeded Michigan State battled to the end, but fell just short against No. 7-seeded Iowa State, 79-75, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Monday at the Alamodome.
The Spartans ended the season with a 15-9 record, while the Cyclones advance to the second round with a 17-10 record.
Michigan State had a balanced performance all around with eight players scoring at least five points. Junior guard Nia Clouden led the Spartans in scoring with 16 points to go along with six rebounds. Sophomore guard Alyza Winston was also in double figures with 11 points. Sophomore forward Taiyier Parks was near a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.
Ashley Joens led all scorers with 33 points, while Madison Wise had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
As expected, Ashley Joens came out fast for the Cyclones with seven early points as ISU took an early 12-9 lead. MSU countered with early points from Clouden, Crooms and Winston to only trail 12-11 at the first media timeout. The Spartans took their first lead after three-point play by Parks. Iowa State responded with an 8-0 to jump out to a 25-16 lead, using the 3-ball. Sharp-shooting ISU made five 3-pointers in the first quarter.
The Spartans scored the first seven of the second quarter to take a 27-26 lead. Michigan State continued to look solid on offense, but Iowa State remained hot from beyond the arc. The Cyclones took advantage of MSU turnovers late in the quarter to take a 45-39 advantage into the locker room.
In the third quarter, turnovers continued to plague MSU with four turnovers in under three minutes, leading to a 56-47 advantage. After a pair of ISU free throws the Cyclones took a 60-50 lead. Iowa State was never able to completely shake the Spartans, as a pair of Clouden free throws to end the period made it a 63-56 game to end the third period.
The Spartans scored nine of the first 11 of the fourth quarter to trim the Cyclone advantage. The Spartans tied the score with a clutch trey by sophomore guard Moira Joiner with 7:29 on the clock. Michigan State was never able to re-take the lead, as ISU took as big a lead as seven points in the fourth period. MSU continued to fight and with a Winston layup made it a 76-75 game with 28 seconds left. But Joens was clutch from the charity stripe to seal the win.
