MSU Women’s Soccer Falls to Northwestern in Overtime Thriller
3/25/2021 6:08:00 PM | Women's Soccer
EAST LANSING, Mich. – In its first game at DeMartin Stadium, the Michigan State women's soccer team dropped an overtime thriller, 1-0, to Northwestern on Thursday.
Just 52 seconds into overtime, Aurea Martin drove up the left side of the field. Martin delivered a great ball to Olivia Stone, who drove it past sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Kozal on the lower right corner for the game winner.
"We fought hard until the end and continued to battle. I am really proud of our backline and of how hard Lauren worked today. It is too bad that we weren't able to find the back of the net to break that tie in regulation," MSU head coach Tom Saxton said.
The Spartans fall 1-6-1 this season, having lost six-straight games. With the win, Northwestern improves to 5-4 this season.
The first half was a very balanced affair with Northwestern holding a slight 3-2 advantage in shots. The Wildcats earned the first shot of the game with a Hallie Pearson shot that was corralled by Kozal in the seventh minute.
Michigan State's first shot came off the foot of junior Gia Wahlberg in the 28th minute. Her shot to the center of the goal was saved by Northwestern's Mackenzie Wood.
In the second half, the Spartans picked up the pace. In the 54th minute, junior forward Camryn Evans and senior forward Michelle Herring both had shot attempts within seconds of each other, but were unable to find the back of the net.
In the second half, the Wildcats out-shot the Spartans by a slight, 4-3 margin.
With neither team able to break the draw, MSU headed to overtime for the first time this season.
"After seven games, it was exciting just to get back to DeMartin Stadium. We have been playing inside and outside on turf and on grass. To be able to play on our home field was really a thrill today," Saxton added.
Michigan State will next take on Illinois on Sunday, March 28 at 5 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
