Freshman Zivana Labovic scores her third goal of the season.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – For the third-straight game, the Michigan State women's soccer team lost a one-goal game, falling to Illinois, 2-1, Sunday at DeMartin Stadium.
"It was a great team effort today. We got on the board which was nice. We have put a lot into these games and not coming up with any results in terms of goals, so to get one was nice. We were very disappointed obviously to let one up afterward. I thought we were in a really good position, putting a lot of pressure on their end," MSU head coach Tom Saxton said.
The Spartans are now 1-7-1 this season, having lost seven-straight games. With the win, Illinois improves to 5-4-1.
Despite out-shooting Illinois 8-3, Michigan State was unable to find the second goal to tie the game. Illinois was efficient with its offense, scoring on two of its three shots.
In the first half, junior forward Camryn Evans provided the two of the first three shots of the game in the 16th and 36th minutes, respectively.
Illinois found the back of the net on its first shot of the game in the 40th minute. After a corner kick by Aleah Treiterer, Eileen Murphy's header snuck past sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Kozal to put the Ililini on top, 1-0.
In the second half, the Spartans continued to apply pressure with an early shot from by senior forward Michelle Herring. There was a flurry of Michigan State offense right before the Spartan goal.
In the 80th minute, freshman forward Zivana Labovic scored her team-leading third goal of the season. After a long free kick by junior defender Samantha White, Labovic's header to the center of the goal tied the score at 1-1.
The Illini weren't done though and with just their third shot of the game found the game winner. In the 86th minute, Kendra Pasquale found Makena Silber to give Illinois the 2-1 win.
"I will always give a lot of credit to Lauren Kozal. She managed the gamer really well back there tonight. I don't think either goal was something she could have planned. I liked the play of Camryn Evans up top, and Sam White have continued to be solid all year. There were a lot of good things; no surprises but a lot of good things." Saxton added.
Michigan State will conclude the regular season with a pair of games. On Wednesday, the Spartans will face Indiana on Wednesday, March 31, before closing out the home schedule against Ohio State on Saturday, April 3.
