East Lansing, Mich. – Seven members of Michigan State's field hockey team were among a group of more than 250 student-athletes who have been recognized as Scholars of Distinction by the National Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).
The Scholar of Distinction program recognizes student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.9 or higher through the first semester of the 2020-21 academic year.
The Spartans honorees were freshman Ashley Harlock (Livonia, Mich./Livonia Churchill), junior Lori Mack (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights), senior Jillian Mahon (Wilton, Conn./Wilton), senior Meredith Ross (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga), freshman Ellie Wheatley (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual) and recent graduates Maggie Cole and Meghan Cole.
Michigan State's seven Scholars of Distinction were the most among all Big Ten schools.
The Spartans were tied for fourth nationally with seven honorees, tied with Massachusetts, Virginia Commonwealth and Wagner. Louisville (12) topped the list, with Fairfield University and Ohio University tied for second with nine honorees apiece.
Last week, 19 members of MSU team were selected to the Division I National Academic Squad, recognizing student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.3 or higher through the first semester of the 2020-21 academic year.
Five Spartans were among a group of nearly 200 to earn squad recognition for four-straight years – seniors Cara Bonshak, Mahon and Ross, as well as Maggie and Meghan Cole.
