Spartans Fall to Ranked Crews in Columbus
3/27/2021 10:09:00 PM | Women's Rowing
East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State got a start to its rowing season on Saturday in Columbus, and fell to ranked squads.
Â
The Spartans, who had 34 athletes making their collegiate debut after the cancelation of the 2020 season, had a tough draw with No. 6 Ohio State in both morning and afternoon racing, as well as No. 7 Michigan and Oregon State crews which were receiving votes in this week's CRCA National Poll.Â
Â
"We knew it was going to be a bit much to debut so many newcomers against such strong competition in week one," said head coach Kim Chavers, who took over as the Spartan mentor in September 2019 and had to wait until today to coach her first official race. "I don't want our athletes to be discouraged – those were some excellent crews that they lined up against today, and while it shows us that we have work to do, its also going to be an opportunity to measure our improvement, because we will see Ohio State and Michigan again later this season. We are focusing on improving day to day and week to week."
