East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State stays in-state for the first time this season for a dual race, heading to Ypsilanti to take on Eastern Michigan on Saturday.Â
Â
Fans are permitted at Ford Lake Park (9075 Huron River Drive, Ypsilanti Township MI) but are asked to maintain social distancing and masking protocols per the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.Â
Â
The two teams will engage in a regular schedule of 2,000 meter races in the varsity and second varsity eight, varsity four, and novice eight. The teams will remain on the water after racing to have a modified 500-meter sprint race in all four boats. 2,000 meter races will go off on 15-minute centers beginning at 11:45 am (varsity eight), and the 500-meter pieces will begin at 12:40 with the varsity eights and go on 10-minute centers.
Â
MSU is looking to carry over momentum from last weekend's Big Ten Invitational in Cincinnati. The Spartans picked up a big win in the varsity four with a victory over No. 17 Minnesota, and also had an open-water win in the second varsity eight over Louisville.
Â
"We're a very young team, and with more than 30 athletes participating in a collegiate race this season after last year was wiped out, there is certainly a learning curve," said head coach Kim Chavers. "We've really seen those younger athletes step up and embrace the challenges that has brought on. We're excited to see what the final push will look like as we head into May."
