MSU denied weekend sweep, but opens season with 3-1 mark.
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Michigan State baseball's season-opening win streak was halted Sunday with a 3-2 loss to Maryland in the final game of the weekend series at Fluor Field in Greenville, South Carolina.
MSU is now 3-1 on the young season, but captured the series over Maryland, after winning Friday night's opener, 6-0, then swept Saturday's twinbill, 7-4 and 5-4.
On Sunday, freshman starter Nick Powers made his Spartan debut and went 5.0 IP, scattering three hits while striking out six, yielding two runs, as the Terps scored a run in the second and third frames. The Spartans got on the board in the sixth, getting a run back as senior outfielder Bryce Kelley sparked the rally with a one-out single. After moving to second on groundout, Kelley was driving in by junior designated hitter Zach Iverson's RBI single.
After the Terps went back on top by two at 3-1 with a run in the top of the seventh, the Spartans countered with a run of their own in the home half of the seventh. Freshman infielder Brock Vradenburg led off with an infield single and moved up to second on an error on the play. Vradenburg moved up to third on a groundout, before sophomore infielder Dillon Kark plated Vradenburg with an RBI sac fly to the gap in right center, pulling MSU within, 3-2, but that would the closest the Spartans would get.
Iverson ended the day 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Kelley was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a walk. Vradenburg was also 1-for-3 with a run scored. Senior infielder Bailey Peterson and sophomore outfielder Zaid Walker also went 1-for-4.
Vradenburg made a pair of nifty defensive plays in the top of the eighth, chasing down a foul ball and catching it near the stands for the first out of the inning, then on the next out, made a nice snag on a scorcher down the the line, scooping and tossing to junior relief pitcher Wyatt Rush covering the bag.
Along with Powers and Vradenburg, sophomore Burrell Jones also made his Spartan debut Sunday. Jones pitched 2.0 IP of relief, chalking up two strikeouts.
In total, six Spartans made their debuts for the Green & White this weekend, as in addition to Powers, Vradenburg and Jones, freshmen infielders Mitch Jebb and Trent Farquhar, along with junior pitcher Jordan Beatson made the first appearances of their MSU career. Beatson transferred to Michigan State from Furman, after they discontinued baseball, and is from nearby Columbia, South Carolina, and made a relief appearance Saturday night.
Michigan State returns to Greenville next weekend, taking on Northwestern in a four-game series, Friday-Sunday, March 12-14, with a single game Friday scheduled for 6:30 p.m., followed by a DH Saturday at 4:30, and wrapping up on Sunday at 1:30 p.m., but schedule is subject to change.'
