Michigan State ends the season with a 4-7 record.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – No. 6 seed Michigan State men's soccer had its season come to an end against No. 3 seed Michigan, 1-0, Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament at the U-M Soccer Complex in Ann Arbor.
With the loss, the Spartans end the season with a 4-7 record, while the Wolverines improve to 6-3-1. This is the second-straight season that Michigan has defeated MSU in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament.
"It was a tough day. Our guys came out ready to play. We came out flying, out-shot them, out-cornered them in the first half. We had good chances, unfortunately we just couldn't capitalize. We started out with more of the same in the second half. After they scored, we just chased the game. We created some pretty good chances, unfortunately we just couldn't score." MSU head coach Damon Rensing said.
The Spartans came out hot with two shots on goal by junior forward Farai Mutatu. In the first 10 minutes, Michigan State had three different players with shots.
After Michigan State held possession early in the first half, the Wolverines settled in with a few chances later in the period. In a span of four minutes, redshirt-junior goalkeeper Hunter Morse was forced to make a pair of diving saves to keep the game scoreless.
Despite out-shooting the Wolverines, 7-3 in the first 45 minutes, the game was scoreless at the half.
In the 54th minute, the Wolverines took a 1-0 lead. After a Spartan turnover, Austin Swiech recovered the ball and found Kevin Buca in the center of the box.
Senior midfielder Michael Miller was looking for the equalizer in the 69th minute with a blast that went just wide on the left side.
Late in the game, junior midfielder Jack Beck had several dangerous chances to find the game-tying goal. With time winding down, Michigan State was unable to find the equalizer and Michigan advances to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals.
"First, I just want to thanks Isiah Handspike our lone senior this year. He was great as a student-athlete, and we talked about him on senior day. Second, I really want to commend our men's soccer players for how they handled themselves through this COVID pandemic. They really handled themselves in a professional manner, and I am really proud we handled ourselves," Rensing said. "Lastly, I told the guys to use it as fuel for next year. We have all these guys coming back. We obviously showed some things that we are capable of. We just need to make a few plays to put us over the top."
