EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State track & field will split squads this week with part of the team heading to Bloomington for the B1G Indiana Invite #3, while the rest of the team will compete at the Husker B1G Invitational in Prairie View, Texas. The Indiana meet will take place on Friday, April16, while the Texas meet takes place over two days, April 16-17.
"As we approach the mid-point of our outdoor season as well as looking ahead to the Big Ten Championships we have seen even more growth since our indoor championships. If we can stay the course by focusing on being at our best it will be a win in my mind. We need to continue to support one another, control our environment, and compete for one another. Beyond the path of our season and athletics, we need to focus on coming together and supporting one another," Interim Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Lisa Breznau said.
Michigan State will send part of the team back to Bloomington for the B1G Indiana Invite #3. The Spartans had a successful meet last week in Bloomington last week, despite several weather delays. Once again, the meet will be a one-day affair.
The Spartans' middle distance and distance runners will take center stage in Bloomington. After setting a personal best in the 1500m last week, senior Morgan Beadlescomb will lead a group of seven runners in the 5000m.Beadlescomb has the second-fastest time in the Big Ten in the 1500m this season (3:41.69). Sophomore John Petruno will be in action in his first 3000m steeplechase of the season.
On the women's side, All-American Jenna Magness will be one of five Spartans running the 5000m. Senior Dillon McClintock, who has the ninth-best time in the Big Ten in the 800m, will run the 1500m this week.
"Our expectations are to continue to support one another, keep the energy focused within our team, and to have a flexible mind. We are excited to have an opportunity to compete again," Breznau added.
Part of the Spartan squad will travel to Prairie View, Texas for the Husker B1G Invitational hosted by the University of Nebraska. The meet will be held at Prairie View A&M's track complex. Thirteen Big Ten schools will participate in the meet with the exception of Maryland.
"When we have the opportunity to travel to a new location as well as fly it presents an opportunity to grow. Learning how to adjust to new circumstances allows us to be bettered prepared for the future and teaches us about resiliency," Breznau said.
At the Husker B1G Invitational, the Michigan State sprinters as well as several field events will be in action. Senior Brooke Bogan (11.93) and junior Shakira Dancy (12.00) are both in the top 20 in the league in the 100m.
Senior Rebecca Mammel will compete in both the hammer and the discus. She is currently seventh in the Big Ten in the hammer (59.83m). Senior Brittany Krug will also be in action in the javelin, where she holds the fifth-best throw in the conference (48.17m).
