"It's another lesson for the group on how to close out a tournament," MSU head coach Casey Lubahn said. "We've had the lead a number of times this season going into the final round but have only been able to win one of them. Hopefully we are learning and can get ourselves in contention again in the next couple of weeks."
Troy Taylor II had the best finish of his career as he tied for second place at 5-under-par 208 (70-68-70). Taylor II finished just one shot behind the medalist, Angus Flanagan of Minnesota. Taylor II made the turn on Sunday at 1-over-par, but two birdies and seven pars over the final nine holes gave him his third round under par of the tournament.
"It was a great week for Troy and he was steady every round," Lubahn said. "He did a good job on the greens and drove the ball better than he has in any other tournament. It was big progress for him."
James Piot had his third top-five finish in the last four events as he took fourth place at 3-under-par 210 (68-69-73).
Bradley Smithson shot his second 1-over-par 72 to finish the tournament 8-over-par 221 (77-72-72) and tied for 25th place.
August Meekhof and Andrew Walker both turned in 4-over-par 75s on Sunday. Meekhof ended the tournament 9-over-par 222 (76-71-75), while Walker was 10-over-par 223 (78-70-75).
The Spartans will play one more tournament next weekend – the Robert Kepler Invitational – in Columbus, Ohio, prior to the Big Ten Championships, April 30 – May 2.
