Spartans Complete Competition at Big Ten Invitational
4/18/2021 12:57:00 PM | Women's Rowing
East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State completed its racing at the Big Ten Invitational on Sunday morning, where it lined up against 14 of the best crews in the country but also battled some choppy water over the course of the weekend.
MSU's focus in the early part of the season has been its own improvement, as more than 30 rowers have made their collegiate debut over the last month. With training schedules over the last 14 months a challenge at best, head coach Kim Chavers wants her team focusing on techniques, racing plans, and its own cohesiveness within its boats – all things it can control on its own.
The Spartans brought four boats to Cincinnati- two varsity eights, a novice eight, and a varsity four. Each boat raced twice on Saturday, and again on Sunday on Harsha Lake. Each of the Big Ten's eight rowing teams were on hand, in addition to eight invited crews, most all nationally ranked from the ACC, SEC, and Pac 12.
MSU's four earned a hard-earned win over No. 17 Minnesota on Sunday, edging the Gophers at the finish line. The Spartan second varsity earned a win over Louisville on Saturday morning, giving the Spartans a pair of bookend wins in the earliest and latest parts of racing on the weekend.
Michigan State has its first in-state race next week when it travels to Ypsilanti to line up with Eastern Michigan.
