East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State senior midfielder Cara Bonshak (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team on Monday as the conference announced postseason award winners ahead of the league tournament.
Michigan State (1-13 overall, 1-7 Big Ten), the No. 8 seed, plays Indiana (1-13, 0-8 B1G), the No. 9 seed, on Tuesday, April 20 at noon (ET) in Iowa City, Iowa. The winner of that match advances to play top-seeded Michigan on Wednesday, April 21.
"This is a tremendous honor for Cara and I can't tell you how excited we are for her," Head Coach Helen Knull said. "The coaching staff and every player on our team are thrilled for her to get recognized by the league. She has been the heart and soul of our team for the last couple of years and is a tremendous example of what it means to be a Spartan."
Bonshak, one of the team's co-captains, started in 13 games for the Spartans before an injury sidelined her for the final game of the regular season and the postseason tournament. She scored one goal this season.
Bonshak was also MSU's recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
A two-time captain, Bonshak appeared in 65 games during her career, starting 44 times. She led the team in assists with seven during the 2019 season and was one of only four players on the team to start in all 18 games. She is a two-time member of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association National Academic Squad, an Academic All-Big Ten selection and won the team's Janine Ackerman Award, which exemplifies leadership, teamwork and character.
