Spartans, Raines Lead the B1G Championship After Opening Round

MAINEVILLE, Ohio – The Michigan State women's golf team leads the Big Ten Championships after the opening round of play on Friday at TPC River's Bend in Maineville, Ohio. The Spartans are 2-under-par 286, one shot ahead of second-place Maryland and four up on third-place Michigan.

Freshman Leila Raines was the only player to shoot a round in the 60s and leads the field individually after her 3-under-par 69. Raines was even at the turn then birdied No. 10 and 11. She recorded six pars and one birdie the rest of the way to shoot what was her second-lowest round of the season.
Paz Marfa Sans and Yurika Tanida both shot even-par 72s and are tied for seventh place. Marfa Sans' round included 16 pars, including nine straight to end the day.
Haylin Harris shot a 1-over-par 73 and is tied for 16th place. Valentina Rossi turned in a 2-over-par 74 and is in 24th place, while Valery Plata shot a 3-over-par 75, which included two birdies to end her round. Plata is tied for 32nd place.
The Spartans will tee off in round two on Saturday between 10:18 and 11:03 a.m.
